Suspect arrested in 99-year-old woman's death

Moise O. Opont (OSCEOLA COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE / October 11, 2007)

OSCEOLA COUNTY - Osceola County deputies today arrested Moise O. Opont in the death of a 99-year-old Poinciana woman.

Opont,18, faces charges of first-degree murder and sexual battery. Deputies said Opont targeted the victim, Edith Mecalla.

Deputies said they arrived at Mecalla's home in the 700 block of Del Ray Drive in Poinciana at about 2:15 a.m. Tuesday. Her 77-year-old daughter had called to report a robbery at the residence. She told police that while she was in the kitchen, she witnessed a man enter her home. The suspect then ran out the back door when he saw her.

After sheriff's K-9 units, choppers and additional deputies searched the area for the suspect, they found Mecalla dead in the back bedroom.
